No, they definitely aren't. They just want to make a living doing what they love. There's a HUGE difference.
As for my view on the topic, read below.
He said...
"Yo,
My name is
Laurence miller and I would like to feature you on my website
bicycleman[dot]net
If you are interested let me know.
laurence@bicycleman[dot]net"
And I said...
"
Laurence,
I don't want to come off as a smart ass, but did you get permission to teach all of the moves on your website that aren't yours?
Also, what do you mean by feature?
-Matt"
And he said...
"You should consider the credibility of your sources. Dan and Dave are
not credible, they run a business praying on peoples naiveness. I'm 28
and bought my first copy of the book By forces Unseen in 1993 when it
was first published. But, I would put money that you have only known
about it for a few years and once it hit the mainstream. The move known
as the clip shift popularized by Dan and Dave has been around for
YEARS! And they don't want to loose there credibility with the familiar
magicians. That is why they chose to put Chads name on it instead of
there own.
Anyway, For example this is the way I feel. I was teaching the "Clip
Shift" as the "One Hand Card Control" for many years, but when dan and
dave made it popular I changed the name for continuity. Unless you know
for a 100% fact that credit is due, don't be childish. I really think
you are a talented kid with more to offer in the future then most
inspiring magicians. I want to put your profile up so that people that
follow me could have a higher level of inspiration by seeing your hard
work progress in the years to come.
Laurence Miller"
And he said...
"I guess you are not interested in my offer. I hope your bad opinion of me changes one day.
Make note: in the months to come, you will see sleights and moves straight from my bicycleman[dot]net being published by Dan and Dave and everyone else. I wanted share with you because I think you're great!
I'll keep you in mind.
Laurence Miller"
And I said...
"Lawrence,
I'm definitely interested in your offer! Why wouldn't I be? I've been
extremely busy with school and watching the Phillies in the World
Series (I'm from Philadelphia) that I have had no time to reply.
It wasn't just Dan and Dave moves that I was talking about. There were various moves originally created by others. That's all.
Anyway, as long as you can truthfully tell me that you have permission
to teach the moves on your site, I'd be happy to be on it. The reason
I'm so concerned about this is because I don't want to associate myself
with someone who is publishing other peoples moves without their
permission for their own gain. Especially after appearing in the
October Edition of Reel Magic Quarterly teaching the Cascade Control
and being in the September (Page 11) and October (Page 12) issues of
Genii Magazine.
I hope you understand the point I'm trying to make without taking offense,
Matt richman"
Then he said...
"Do you know about the Cherry Control? If not, I will hook you up with a free download from my site. You will love it! "
And I said...
"I've met Ricky and he personally taught me the Cherry Control. I don't
do it because I don't fan much when I perform. Do you have his
permission to teach it on your website?
Sorry for being an ass hole about credits,
Matt Richman"
A day or two later, I had a 1 hour session via Skype with him. A few
days later, I had a 2 hour session with Liquidsn/Woodman/Tony via
Skype. I found out that a lot of information that Lawrence gave me was
false so I told him the following...
"I'm sorry. I won't participate in your website. Think Seattle and
Tony... You know what I mean. I'm very upset at all of the BS you told
me.
-Matt"
And he said,
"I hope you will form your own opinions and stop taking other peoples
opinions as truth. I was only nice to you, I offered much more to you
than you offered to me. Pull Back Pass included."
If you actually took the time to read this, you know how fed up with
this guy I am. Don't get me wrong though, he still has amazing skill
with cards.
